With the advent of PBS subsidised treatment for IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis), now that Nintedanib is available, it will be of increasing importance to be able to achieve adequate diagnostic tissue specimens for patients with possible disease. When the radiology (CT scan) is not entirely consistent with IPF, but the lung doctor is still concerned about this possibility, then lung biopsy is required. Now that we have Cryobiopsy, we can often achieve this as a day procedure, without the need for painful and costly surgery.
